This collection pertains to the life of Patrick Henry including copies of his will and the wills of his mother, Sarah Winston Henry, and uncle, the Rev. Patrick Henry. Also includes other legal documents, receipts, memoranda, and letters collected by Patrick Henry's grandson, William Wirt Henry, for use in writing his biography, PATRICK HENRY, and for William Wirt's biography, LIFE AND CHARACTER OF PATRICK HENRY. Included are documents (deed, legal opinion, and a letter) concerning "Red Hill" in Charlotte County, Va.; John Fitch's bond for payment to Virginia for a demonstration of his steamboat; a revolutionary war letter from Patrick Henry about a new levy of Virginia troops by Congress (1778); and the disposition of slaves in the wills. Many of the items are copies, some of which are manuscript copies written and attested to by Patrick Henry's youngest son, John.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
